The UL1446 motor standards and IEEE test guidelines state:

Note: If the wire is not rated within 5C of the rated insulation then a protective barrier (i.e. sleeving) must be used in the "hot spots" of the unit to increase the temperature protection. The minimum wire temperature rating is determined by UL and the OEM.
